Decades ago, back in the 1870s, families in the Horse Creek area of the Texas Hill Country just west of the small town of Medina began meeting together in homes and schools. They enjoyed Bible preaching and occasional open-air meetings. Leadership was provided by James Elijah Keese and Tomas Harrison Keese, among others.
In 1888, a visiting gospel preacher by the name of W. W. Turner made a list of the first members of the congregation. Twenty-eight members were listed, including three elders and two deacons. The congregation continued to meet together in such locations as the Lima schoolhouse, the Rocky Creek schoolhouse, and the Bluff schoolhouse - on those occasions when the services of a preacher could be obtained.
In the early 1900s, the various small area schools began to close and to consolidate in the township of Medina. Following this trend, the congregation decided to move to Medina as well. In May of 1904, a piece of property was purchased in Medina near the Medina school, and a small one-room wood frame building was constructed. The current congregation still meets on this property, and we celebrated our 100th year on this property in 2004.
In about 1926, the small frame church building was torn down and a larger wood frame church building was constructed. Two calico curtains were installed across the rear of the auditorium to separate the area into classrooms. In 1948, the building was expanded due to increasing attendance. W. C. Swinney and Bob Swinney (father and son) were influential ministers during these times.
Residents of the Medina Children's Home began attending at Stringtown Road, and in 1957, the building was expanded yet again. A new brick auditorium and classrooms were built in 1967, and this building currently serves us today. The older wooden building was moved to a new location where it still stands - on the corner of Stringtown and Highway 16 about two blocks south of its old location.
Old photos and church material have been collected and preserved, and the resulting book, History of the Church of Christ in Medina, is available in the Medina Community Library. Just recently, another collection of church events, documents, and dates has surfaced, and these will be included in a future revision of the history of the congregation.
Please contact the church office if you would like to purchase a copy of the book.
